With the £430 million new Southmead Hospital now approved by the
planners work is due to start this spring and the first phase
completed within three years.
The new 800 bed hospital, financed by a
Private Finance Initiative (PFI) has been the subject of a series of
public consultations. It includes a helicopter landing pad,
multi-storey car parks, and landscaped grounds which will become
public amenities.
The Henleaze Society AGM in November 2009 was addressed by a team
from Carillion, the developers, who said the new complex would be “one
of the major acute hospitals in the UK”. Phase One will see the
completion of the new hospital buildings with staff moving in by mid
2014.
In Phase Two older parts of the existing hospital will be
demolished or reconstructed with completion planned by the end of
2015.
The new building - which is designed to be environmentally
friendly - has “natural ventilation” and uses waste heat to provide
20% of energy.
The Carillion team, in response to worries expressed at
the AGM about road congestion, said they were in consultation with the
Highways Authority to deal with traffic problems around the site.
Local residents have also expressed concerns about the hours of
working during the project and its effects.
Project manager Andrew
Beard says the average working day will be 8-6 pm although on some
occasions it may be necessary to start at 7.00 am. He said their will
be a community liaison officer available to deal with problems raised
by local residents.
